Today’s hunters have an assortment of hunting optic choices. Finding the best hunting optic can be almost as challenging as the hunt itself. There are so many choices and so many options available that it's sometimes difficult to decide which one will best suit your needs. Hopefully the information below will help you define the options and choices you have, and give you a plan for finding the best hunting optics to buy.
Rifle scopes:
The function of any rifle scope is to help aim, and give you an idea of distance to the target. Riflescopes need to be very light, rugged and with outstanding optics.
Other factors to consider would be the image and it's quality. It's just vital that the optics deliver as much light as possible to the eyepiece. The more light you have to work with, the sharper the resolution and eventually the shot.
Lens quality is a huge issue, too, and can be detected by any distortion visible around the edges. Multi-coated Lens coatings are applied to quality optics to reduce reflection-causing glare and help gather light for a crisper, brighter image.
Adjustment capability is also important. A good scope will have little or no movement of the reticle. Check for Parallax error as well. This is when slight changes in eye position change the aim of the scope. You can expect most quality riflescopes to be parallax error-free to 100 yards.
Magnification of the target image is another item to consider. If you're hunting with a very powerful gun over a great distance this may be something you would want.
Not directly related to the scope, but very important to the performance of your riflescope is your mount. Your scope must be securely mounted where it cannot move. Make sure you have a solid, perfectly aligned mount on which to place your scope.
Finally make sure the scope you buy is watertight, and fogproof.

Range finders:
Technology and lower prices have made range finders a more common purchase for the hunter. A range finder measures the distance between you and your target. Here’s how range finders work: A laser gets projected from the unit. The laser bounces off the intended target and is sent back into the range finder. A microprocessor calculates the distance to a target based on the time it takes a laser to travel to the target and back.

Binoculars
Binoculars are identified by simple code. It is usually two numbers separated by an "X", for example, 10X50. The first number represents the power of magnification of the binocular, which means that the object or subject appears to be this much closer than when viewed with the naked eye. The second number is the diameter of the objective (front) lens. The larger the number, the more light the binocular gathers and the brighter the image will be. Good binoculars are always a combination of magnification, objective lens diameter, image quality, size, weight, durability and quality.
